Smart engineering stretches the materials

The philosophy behind the way LM Glasfiber selects materials is basically very simple. It is based on stable, well-tested materials that provide the best possible balance between price and performance. Via smart engineering, we ”stretch” what the materials are capable of and continually expand the envelope of what can be achieved.

Decades of glass fibre experience

LM Glasfiber has been working with glass fibre and polyester ever since 1952 – and with wind turbine blades since 1978. The period has witnessed colossal leaps forward in both materials and processes. We have achieved the majority of such steps in-house. Right from an early stage, we have focused on R&D as a strategic priority and this has resulted in an accumulated know-how that has enabled us to maintain our market-leader position.

Materials testing and development

Much of our work with improving the properties of the materials we use takes place in our test lab, with systematic research via tests and analysis. Our lab is also responsible for checking all materials entering the line, so we can be sure of keeping to the specifications.

Working closely with suppliers

Previously, our purchasing consisted of off-the-shelf materials – now it is specific performance characteristics that we buy from our suppliers. The requirements we present in relation to specially developed raw materials have escalated in step with our own technological development and demands for greater integration between design, materials and processes.
As a result, we have developed close working relationships with our suppliers. We now therefore define what we need and work with them to develop materials customised to these particular requirements.

Integrated blade development

Our aim is to boost the efficiency of wind turbine blades – and also reduce their price. This requires perfect interaction between the blades and all the other wind turbine components.
How we work with our customers

Full-scale testing on all blades

All our blade types undergo both
static and dynamic testing. We can
test blades up to 80 metres long
in our own test rig.
